Community Outreach Events

White Cane Awareness Day promotes community wide awareness of the white cane law. City officials, police officers, FOCB staff, students, volunteers, and community members gather to read the white cane law and participate in a walk to increase community awareness and make the streets safer for blind individuals.

The Volen Center in Boca Raton is the location of our outreach program for Independent Living every Thursday, 10AM-1130AM. Location: 1515 West Palmetto Park Road. Seniors who are losing their vision and unable to travel to our facility in Palm Springs (just north of Lake Worth) can learn alternative techniques of doing everyday tasks and meet with others who are in the same situation. This class is taught by FOCB instructors who provide solutions for daily problems you come up against when struggling with vision loss, and introduce you to the latest aids and appliances adapted for people with low vision.

Annual Open House showcases adaptive technology along with FOCB’s programs and services that are available free of charge for blind and visually impaired people. Representatives from the Palm Beach Talking Book Library, Palm Tran Connection, FL Department of Blind Services, Guide Dog Handlers and assistive technology manufacturers, attend and showcase their equipment and services with attendees.

Monthly Educational Workshops are open to the public with topics that include 211 Resources, Adaptive Products and Technology, Foundation Fighting Blindness latest research, AIRA, CPR, Amazon Echo and Alexa, Bard Mobile, LYFT and UBER apps, Active Shooter Information, Mobility, ADA Law, Palm Tran Connection Pass Web, Seeing AI App, Shopping on your Device, and Social Media. Sessions can be accessed virtually through the Zoom Conferencing Platform.
