FOCB’s White Cane Safety Day event was a smash! Staff and students, the mayor, commissioners and councilmen, and other guests joined us for a day of celebration and awareness, honoring the independence, resilience, and achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. With our police escort, we marched up busy Congress Avenue to draw the attention of all motorists who need to learn that the blind and visually impaired have the right of way when crossing streets. On October 6, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson and the U.S. Congress signed a joint resolution and proclaimed that October 15 be celebrated as White Cane Safety Day every year. Together as a nation, we can make the streets safer and raise awareness regarding the White Cane Law and the Equal Access Law.
